Residents of several villages in Chittoor district are living in fear due to the increasing movement of wild elephants from nearby forest areas. Herds of elephants have been frequently entering agricultural fields and human settlements, causing damage to crops, property, and creating panic among villagers. According to local farmers, elephant movement has been reported in villages located near forest fringes, particularly during the night hours. The animals have been raiding fields cultivated with crops such as sugarcane, banana, paddy, and vegetables, resulting in significant losses to farmers. Many villagers have been staying awake throughout the night to protect their crops and homes.
Forest Department officials have intensified monitoring activities and are deploying special teams to track elephant movements. Awareness programs are being conducted to educate residents on safety measures and to prevent human-elephant conflicts. Officials have advised villagers to avoid approaching the animals and to immediately inform authorities upon sighting elephant herds. The district administration is also coordinating with the Forest Department to implement long-term measures, including the strengthening of elephant corridors, installation of solar fencing, and the use of early warning systems in vulnerable areas. Compensation procedures for affected farmers are being reviewed to ensure timely support.
