India has taken a major step towards further strengthening its defence capabilities. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on Monday successfully test-fired the indigenously developed Long Range Land Attack Cruise Missile (LRLACM). The missile was launched from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha. The Ministry of Defence said that the missile successfully completed all its targets as per the test flight path. Data collected from various tracking and monitoring systems also confirmed the performance of key technologies. Defence officials said that with this success, India has further strengthened its long-range precision strike capabilities. Indian industries, including DRDO, have played a key role in the development of the missile.
The LRLACM missile is known to have a range of about 1,500 kilometers. Its specialty is that it can easily reach targets without being detected by enemy radars while traveling at low altitudes. If necessary, it has the ability to hover in the air for a while and attack with high precision after identifying the target. Defense sources say that this missile can carry conventional warheads as well as nuclear warheads. With this, India will be further strengthened in land-based strategic attack systems.
